5 Ways to Simplify Your Business

By Brian O'Connell Published December 6, 2019 Updated October 14, 2022

Running a business can be complicated and stressful. You need to focus your attention on so many different areas that you may feel like you are constantly putting out fires. You have to find ways to become more organized and get a handle on things or you will constantly face the stress that comes with feeling out of control. Here are some ways to help you simplify your business.

Be Organized

When you’re disorganized and distracted, you don’t know where to focus next. Being organized makes it easier to simplify your business. It helps you to deal with tasks by eliminating those with low priority and delegating others.

Find a place to prominently display your goals and keep focused on what really matters for the success of your business. It is so easy to become distracted and even constantly trying to respond to emails and calls can deflect your attention from what’s most important.

Try to set aside specific times for attending to your inbox and to calls and you may be surprised by how much more you can accomplish.

Business involves doing many of the same things over and over. Having written procedures and templates can make tasks easier to complete and to delegate.

Fix Outdated Business Processes

As your business expands, you need to look at your existing processes and see where you can make changes. Processes that worked well in the beginning stages of the business may not work so well once you start growing. If you have a system that employees and clients often complain about, this is a good place to start.

Investing in a computerized maintenance management system may be a good idea if maintenance management is an issue. A CMMS offers many benefits that help maintenance managers to schedule preventative maintenance and much more. If you don’t have strong systems in place, it can put your business at a disadvantage.

Communicate Effectively

Long meetings and revisiting the same relatively unimportant issues week after week can be a great time waster. Keep meetings short and to-the-point by only discussing information that is really important for the growth of your business.

Use the power of technology to communicate effectively where it can’t be done face-to-face. There are many different well-recognized collaboration tools such as Asana and Dropbox that can reduce busywork so you can focus on things that matter.

By optimizing your communication, you avoid any time-wasting misunderstandings and allow for constructive feedback to help simplify your business processes.

Hire the Right People

There comes a time in every business where you can no longer do it all on your own and you have to hire more people. It really matters who you hire and you need to find employees who understand your expectations and what the job entails.

You want to hire people who don’t take too long to get up to speed and will be on the same wavelength as you when it comes to things like business simplification. It helps if you have a defined hiring process in place to help make sure potential candidates are the right fit.

Measure Valuable Metrics

You must have key performance indicators (KPIs) that you can track or you won’t know how your business is doing. Trying to track too many can be a mistake and it’s better to focus on the ones that are most relevant, such as the number of leads, conversion rates, and average sales.

Choose specific measurements that relate directly to your goals so that you can invest your time and resources on what really matters.
