Covid-19 pandemic is an unprecedented worldwide crisis that is affecting human lives to date. One cannot oversee the fact that the crisis has affected the society, economy, businesses, and people’s lives in ways that were incomprehensible for most in the present generations. The amount and rate of transformation businesses have to go through to survive and prosper can create fundamental operational differences for the future. An undoubted factor about the future is that digitization is going to be the next normal.

The economical challenges and trends business leaders have to face during the crisis are compelling them to make careful changes in the business model. Some of them are only focused on dealing with the situation at hand by making cuts. On the other hand, few of them are focused on making the changes permanent so that they can come out as winners in the future.

Even before the coronavirus crisis arose many businesses felt the need for digitalization to cope up with the current market trends. The crisis has shown businesses how uncertain and vulnerable situations can be for them. Companies that had high amounts of sales before the pandemic crashed and burned within a matter of weeks. However, companies that already had a digital presence were able to adjust their business strategy to meet demands present in the market. In India, many online food delivery businesses like Swiggy and Zomato shifted from food to delivering groceries to keep their businesses afloat while meeting customer demands.

Business leaders would benefit from focusing on the advantages of the lockdown and its effects on the operations. The time saved by not traveling for work gives them time to concentrate on new programs for the company. Businesses can gain from digitized customer-relation-management plans since complete recovery from the crisis seems distant in the future.

Many business leaders have been struggling to make progress during the crisis even though they had certain digital programs in place. The major reason is the lack of digital integration of their customer service and back end operations.

Business leaders might need to take a few steps backward to redesign the ways of operations and management to align the new values and possibilities. The deciding factors for these changes would be new market trends, market behavior, laws, regulations, and supply chain dynamics. Digital solutions were utilized by non-millennials on a scale which was not the scenario pre-pandemic. Many business leaders and managers used tools like video chatting for the first time to achieve business goals. Digitalized interactions between B2B operations increased by 30% during the pandemic. Many business questions that had always hindered digital transformation were mopped away to fulfill the need of the hour. Most of the consumer behavior that propelled such changes are likely to become permanent.

A lot of times business leaders will have to change the core company values to keep up with the changes in the market trends and demands due to the crisis. They would need to progress with a better structure which includes a clear strategy, inclusion of new talents, and achieving a proper balance between the company values and operational dynamics. Providing services remotely will enable businesses to take advantage of the major shifts in customer’s digital preferences for services and support. Business leaders will have the prime function to ensure that they employ structures to build or remodel the business instead of opening a new one. It will help the company to retain its current customer base as well as add to it.

Most businesses are expected to achieve new levels of agility in terms of virtual operations to tap into customer demands. Business leaders, managers, and executives have realized the importance and advantages of digital tools in the business environment. Employing digital methods of working such as using cloud technologies or videoconferencing can unlock new potential for productivity as local becomes more global. These tools have also shown businesses many ways to achieve targets with lesser and better use of human resources. Digitized business environments can achieve better effectiveness with better examining, analyzing, and mapping objectives.

Direction for New Investments and Costs

Every company that has come up stronger during the pandemic has shown the importance of digitalization as the core driver for the business. This insight has been significant because most often businesses thought of digital tools as merely a support system. This shift in the core factors of business would mean that business leaders would need to rethink their investments and the importance of digital resources. Priority would need to be given to digital tools and human resource capabilities related to the operations of those tools. The importance of data collection and analysis will have newfound importance in business management.

In due course, businesses would need to normalize the significance of digitalization as the core driver of firm values. Business leaders would need to build ecosystems that direct digital tools towards achieving customer demands, relationship, and support.
