How to Succeed in the Locksmith Business

By Yulia I. Published February 20, 2021 Updated March 16, 2023

Running a locksmith business may not sound like a lot of work or hassle for an entrepreneur that is trying to figure out what business to start. However, just like with any other company, there are specific challenges and things to consider to have a pleasant experience. Considering that most locksmith businesses are owner-operated, the client needs to feel that they can rely on receiving standard operating procedures that ensure quality, privacy, and trust. We’re putting together the most important aspects to keep in mind when operating a locksmith business.

Start with a Business Plan

This one may feel a bit self-explanatory. However, since it’s an activity that doesn’t seem to require too much planning, some entrepreneurs just go head-first into starting the business and dealing with things as they come. Taking the time to come up with a clear and consistent business plan will help you know in advance what your strengths are, where you need to be careful, and where things can get tricky. If you don’t know anything about putting together a business plan, there are lots of consultants available that can guide you in the right direction. Also, asking a friend for help is a great idea as you can bounce some ideas off them as well.

Availability

Assuming you already started the locksmith business and you’re ready to take customers. One of the best recommendations that we can give you is to be available for emergency services and keep a business schedule during which customers can rely on you. When people need a locksmith, they need to know they will be able to get in touch with one. Replying to a call two hours later can mean the issue was already fixed, and they’ll remember you as the locksmith that didn’t show up when they needed it the most. An answering machine is a great thing to have if you’re already on the job and just can’t use the phone. It’s not the cheapest solution, but it can save you a lot of lost customers.

Experience in the Business

It goes without saying that people are reaching out for a professional locksmith because they feel they’re over their heads with the issue they’re facing. Of course, new locks and intricate problems that nobody’s dealt with before can come up with every job. However, having a few years of experience in the domain will help a lot. Not only that will it take less to get the job done, but the customers will also be able to tell that you know what you’re doing and possibly recommend you to their friends.

Get an Online Presence

The biggest mistake someone in the locksmith business can make is stick to the traditional ways of promoting your work. Putting out fliers or buying road-side advertising just isn’t enough anymore, you need to be present in the online environment for a real shot at success. If you don’t have the means or the know-how needed to create a presentation website, at least make sure to go online and post on all the forums and discussions that focus on locksmiths. This way, you could get some extra customers and help with the old ‘word of mouth’ marketing as well. It’s the least you can do to get an online presence, even though we strongly recommend getting a website and someone to optimize it properly. You’d be amazed how many locksmith businesses rely on offline advertising only, so having your own website could mean a lot of traffic on Google and other popular search engines.

Transparency

Whenever you land a client, make sure you’re transparent at all times. This means letting the customer trust the professional in front of them. Provide your full address, name, phone number, and email address on the invoice. Furthermore, always be straight with the customer about the details of the job you’re doing. Inform them of any additional materials needed or anything that can come up during the process.

Hoping that these tips will help you get started with the locksmith business of your dreams, we wish you the best of luck and many happy customers! Don’t forget, if you apply all these steps, your customers will be satisfied, and then you will get many recommendations since everyone is looking for a locksmith that can be vouched for by a friend or acquaintance.
