6 Habits That Will Make You Successful

By Lidia Staron Published March 10, 2020 Updated October 14, 2022

One of the most important things when setting a goal for ourselves is to determine which habits we should develop to get there. Instead of focusing on a huge goal that seems unattainable, creating habits is the best way to make sure we get there. By keeping ourselves accountable and reinforcing them every day, these habits will be our roadmap toward success.

Here are the six habits that will help you to have success in whatever you want to accomplish:

1. Enough Quality Sleep

This heading here is the key. It’s not only about getting the well-known recommended 8 hours of sleep. They must be quality sleep as well. Why? When you get quality sleep, your body’s ability to regenerate and heal increases. At large, this translates into higher productivity.

Furthermore, you’ll have more energy the next day, which will help you handle any work stress headed your way. Another important benefit of getting quality sleep is that your lifespan increases overall. Studies have shown that not sleeping the hours we should has a direct effect on our life expectancy.

Interestingly, getting enough sleep is a habit that’s built by smaller habits. These include trying to go to bed at the same time every night, as well as separating yourself from bright screens at least 30 minutes before you head to sleep. If you work from home, make sure the area where you do your work is different than your bed and, preferably, your bedroom.

2. Listen to Others

Sometimes we might be overzealous in our desire to get our ideas across. Therefore, it’s important that we listen to what others have to say. This is something you can apply at meetings, where your attention can divert easily.

Make a conscious effort to listen to what each of your coworkers is saying. If you’re in a position to do so, open the floor so that others can intervene. Lastly, always consider criticism. Whenever someone provides constructive criticism, it’s important that you listen and evaluate if what they’re saying is something that applies to you, and how you can then change whatever it is for the better.

“Listening is being able to be changed by the other person.”

-Alex Alda

3. Develop a Consistent Wake-Up Routine

Just as you should go to bed at the same time every day, it’s ideal that you wake up every day at the same time. Establishing a consistent wake-up Routine will allow you to set out a structure for the day. Furthermore, you can plan ahead and organize your schedule accordingly. If you enjoy exercising, this might be the perfect time for it, as you’ll completely wake up your body with your daily exercise routine.

Another thing many people find helpful is using this time to writing your tasks for the day. Before even looking at your phone, you can write down what you want to accomplish. Then, you can check your phone and see what other people might need from you and make room for them where you can.

4. Make a Daily To-Do List

As we just said, you can write down the things you want to do as soon as you wake-up. However, you might also enjoy doing this at night, before heading to bed. Either way, you can set up specific goals for each day, which will allow you to organize your thoughts and make sure no task is left unattended.

You should give priority to the most urgent tasks while leaving those that don’t require your immediate attention for last on the list. A great way to motivate yourself is by checking them off after you’ve accomplished them. This allows you to have higher accountability towards yourself while giving you the enjoyment provided by small wins.

5. Have a Personal Financial Plan

You can make a financial plan yourself, or you can get help from a financial planning professional. A financial plan could help you manage your finances. Some people use payday loans using services like OpenCashAdvance which financial plans could help to manage them.

No matter which route you go, financial planning starts with these six steps:

  • 1. Set goals
  • 2. See where your money goes
  • 3. Get that employer match
  • 4. Prepare for emergencies
  • 5. Attack toxic debt
  • 6. Invest to really grow your savings

6. Review the Day

This habit is intrinsically related to the last one. By making a review of the day you can see which things you accomplished and which ones you didn’t. Also, you can analyze the reasons for this. Are you setting too many things on your plate? Or on the contrary, do you find yourself with more free time than you wish?

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”

-George Santayana

Only by reviewing your day can you adjust the habits you’re trying to implement. Besides, this also allows you to see how far you’re from your goals, and what things you should change to make sure you achieve them in the timeline you set out for yourself.

Conclusion

Which of these habits have you already incorporated into your life? Which ones do you think will be the hardest for you to implement?

Remember to write down what you want to accomplish, and make sure you check with yourself if you’ve practiced this habit each day. This reinforcement can be a great motivation to continue building new habits that will help you succeed in life!
