8 Essential Tips To Optimize Your Website’s Landing Page for Mobile

By Chirag Leuva Published April 6, 2015 Updated December 1, 2022

80% of  Internet users own a mobile and make the use of Smart-phone for relevant web search. Mobile web usage has gone to a high peak with 6 millions of Smart-phones on the planet.

Simply considering a few selected representatives won’t work. The website should work on any device, whether current or future. But how do you know the type of device the user is using? The solution is to use esponsive web design. This is a new paradigm that allows your website to scale to different device sizes. Even the web-page should load and scale properly based on portrait and landscape.

#2. Strong Call-to-Action – Hyperlinks, buttons and forms!

Your landing page’s main purpose is to compel a user to make an action. A small hike in click-throughs means a significant gain in business.

Call-to-action can be content boosting, lead generating or business centered. It can be of any form, whether it is a button, for example,  “Download Now”, or a form submission. Form submission is an important and much accepted call-to-action that includes the name and e-mail of a user with a submit button.

How to create an effective call-to-action?

  • Make it distinctive using contrast colors.
  • Limit the potential action of your visitors.
  • Make sure that your call-to-action are indeed actions
  • Test your CTA to make it count.

Keep your CTA simple and it should be such that acquaints your visitors about the next action. Don’t keep lengthy forms if mobile landing page’s primary purpose is lead generation.Strong Call-to-Action

Suggestion – it is advisable not to place the CTA at the location on the landing page which is not viewable. Don’t even keep lengthy forms if the mobile landing page’s primary purpose is lead generation.

#3. Load Time – Faster the better!

Will you wait for 10 seconds for a web page to load? An average mobile page take 7 seconds to load. If the loading time is 3 or 4 seconds, then it is likely that you may lose users. Any delay longer than a second can interrupt their flow of thought, creating poor experience. But nobody can guarantee the 2-second mobile page load time.

Top 4 recommendation every mobile page designer must know, to make the page load faster:

  1. Eliminate redirection
  2. Reduce DNS lookups per page.
  3. Reduce HTTP request per page.
  4. Limit to 2 domains per page

#4. Go Local – Landing Page relevant to Local users!

With the advent of new devices with latest technologies, users are often on the move. Here, the urge of providing location services arises. Through Geo-tracking systems, you can track users within 5 to 20 miles based on their IP address. With the use of the latest technology, Geolocation API, you can get the accurate location of users. This gives you an opportunity to make your landing page relevant to local users and personalize your website to them. Businesses with significant off-line presence can grab potential benefits if they prefer localization of services.

#5. Readability – Be Legible!

Don’t compromise the size for the content. Both are important from the users perspective. Font size should be such that can be readable without zooming. If the user can’t read the content within an arm’s length, then the size should be bigger. Even avoid the landing page with excessive load of content and prioritize it. Make your content easily navigable and consistent as well.

#6. Go for Thumb test!

The clickable targets should be easily operable by your fingers and thumb. If it can’t be clicked easily through, then it needs to be re-thought. Leave ample room between links to avoidthe  user clicking on wrong links. Even avoid placing photos exactly on the landing page and use plug-ins so the images can be easily swiped.

#7. Navigation – Keep it simple and straightforward!

Navigation features should be simple. Due to the limited screen on handheld devices, navigation needs to be more simple on mobile sites rather than a traditional website. Try placing buttons to various parts of your website.

Even reduce the number of menu buttons and taps as well. For easy navigation, include a search bar, back-to-home and other menu options in the right places. Concentrate on actionable buttons as it needs to be of noticeable size. Responsive navigation is the latest trend in 2015.

#8. Test your landing page – Consider A/B testing!

What works for your desktop landing page will not necessarily work for your mobile landing page. Testing is the only solution. A/B testing will evaluate the impact of your landing page and test multiple design options at once. Such testing has even shown leads up by 40%. You can even go for multivariate testing. If you have two design ideas, then go for A/B testing and if you are trying to get customers to a specific page, then multivariate testing should be considered.
