Succeeding in business has a lot more to do with psychology and mindset than you might think. Step number one to become an entrepreneur is to think differently. But, in what ways?
The entrepreneurs who are most likely to succeed are not those who jump into it lightly or without thinking through the ramifications of their decision. Instead, they are people who are able to think outside the box. Entrepreneurs think differently, which gives them a unique viewpoint on the world, allowing them to operate in a way that leads to success.
Here are a few ways to show how entrepreneurs think differently than everyday people:
To an entrepreneur, an obstacle is an opportunity to take a calculated risk. The keyword here is calculated. You must take risks in business, but you have to weigh the pros and cons. Not all risk is worth taking, but you must take some.
Successful entrepreneurs are masters of identifying the risks they must take and discard the rest.
To mitigate risk entrepreneurs are ready to:
- List potential and known risks. There are strategic, financial, operational, and market risks, just to mention a few.
- Rank each risk based on probability.
- Estimate the potential costs associated with risk.
- Take time to understand their industry.
- Understand their target market.
- Negotiate with partners, vendors, and team members.
Competition helps you succeed. Yes, I know. People don’t usually think of competitors positively. Instead of looking at others in the same sphere of business as rivals, entrepreneurs take the opportunity to examine their competition to learn what works, what doesn’t work, and how to apply what they learn to their own business. By understanding what their competition is doing, they learn how to differentiate themselves from their rivals by taking strategic risks.
Here some valuable things you can learn from your competition:
- Customer Service – Study how they respond to customers. Check out review sites and social media.
- Social Media – How do they present themselves on social media? Are they actively interacting or they have a couple of accounts with the last post two years ago?
- Reputation – What do their customers say about them publicly? Do they respond to negative or positive reviews?
- Advertising – Where do they advertise? What kind of ads do they run? What language do they use?
- Web Presence – How do they present their company through their website? Do they have a boring corporate website, or site that positions them as an authority in the field?
- Marketing – When you sign up for their email list what follows? Do they have a strong email marketing campaign in place?
- Authority – Does the industry considers them an authority? Are they speaking at trade shows and other industry events? Can you read about them in online and offline publications?
Nothing comes easily. There are always going to be demands on the time and energy of an entrepreneur. Successful entrepreneurs know how to prioritize between important and trivial demands. The best entrepreneurs realize that every piece of their business has to be in tune for the company to function well. They do not chase the easy way out of obstacles, but rather take every challenge as a chance to examine their business strategies. They never rest on past success, but continue to always drive forward and perfect their processes.
Seeking perfection is a losing business strategy. Entrepreneurs understand that aiming for good is more productive than seeking perfection. Inexperienced business owners spend a disproportionate amount of time trying to match everything to their original business plan. Successful entrepreneurs are willing to change their original plans and strategies if they can grow from doing so. They spend more time doing things that take them toward their goals instead of chasing the perfect solutions.
Small things matter
While entrepreneurs don’t spend the majority of their time on small details, they don’t ignore the fact that the small details do matter. The most effective entrepreneurs dismantle big concepts into smaller chunks that can then be delegated to the appropriate channels, ensuring that nothing is missed and everything works well together.
Mistakes don’t kill momentum
The entrepreneurs who have garnered the most success also tend to have the most mistakes under their belt. Entrepreneurs think differently about their mistakes, as they do not face mistakes with a fearful mindset, but instead recognize them as opportunities to grow. Good entrepreneurs admit to their mistakes, look at the journey that led to the mistake, learn from it, and continue on.
Good ideas don’t happen by accident
Successful entrepreneurs admit that what starts off as a mediocre idea can become a great idea with trial and error, energy, and passion. The best products on the market didn’t always start out that way — they were the result of planning, strategy, and patience. The best entrepreneurs show initiative and refuse to quit when faced with a challenge.
Here are some ways to generate great business ideas:
- Talk to friends and family. Are there products or services that frustrate them? Some of the most successful businesses got where they are by simply improving existing products.
- Consider the products and services that bug you. Can you do it better?
- Travel to new places and observe.
- Always have a notebook with you, so you can write down your business ideas. Keep working at it. Think of business idea generation as a muscle that is keep working.
- Once you think of something do your research online. Are there companies already offering the product or service you are thinking about? If yes, can you do it better? If no one is offering your business idea, is there a market for it?
Good ideas need input
Think over some of the most prominent entrepreneurs that you know of. Most of them are great communicators. What makes someone great at communicating? Usually, they not only know how to present their own ideas, but they invite others to speak, listening with care. This allows them to see things from multiple perspectives, which can help a business that might otherwise become stagnant to benefit from different viewpoints and opinions.
Being an entrepreneur requires intentionality
Entrepreneurs are willing to put in the extra time and effort on their passions, showing a singular focus that drives them to prioritize their time and energy to the things that matter the most. They don’t waste time on comforts and distractions, but maintain habits and processes that will maximize their efficiency.
Entrepreneurs can’t help being entrepreneurs
One of the key areas that defines an entrepreneur is that they can’t help carrying the habits that make them successful in business into all other areas of their life. They take responsibility for their decisions and actions.
Becoming a successful entrepreneur isn’t easy, but it is well worth the effort. Because entrepreneurs think differently, they are able to adapt, overcome, and succeed where others fail.
