What You Need To Know About Buying An External Hard Drive For Your Mac

By Rahul Sharma Published July 8, 2014 Updated October 2, 2022

Purchasing an external hard-drive to give a little extra boost to your Mac’s storage system is a popular choice amongst avid apple users today, and it’s not difficult to see why. With an external hard-drive, you can accomplish a variety of different tasks, as they allow you to store large files, such as your music collection, family photos or documents that you have managed to accumulate over the years, and you can even use your external to back-up your data in case of a crash.

However, as handy as these devices can be, you need to be sure you select the correct one if you want to make sure it’s going to meet all your needs for the future. It’s typically a prudent idea to buy the hard-drive with the most space you can possibly find, as long as it meets your budget. You may feel as though you don’t need a significant deal of space straight away, but you’ll be surprised how quickly that drive fills up. Before you go searching for the

Types of External Hard Drive

The two types of external hard-drive that you can typically buy are the version that is basically just an empty case, and the version that includes everything you need already installed. Most of the time, the kind of hard-drive which has had the software installed is the most popular option, and you can usually come across these in any computer store, tech store or even some general large shopping locations.

  • The external hard-drives that have been already built and organized for you, come assembled to suit your needs perfectly, usually packed with a warranty that will cover your drive, cables, case, and power supply for a set period of time. All you need to do in this case is plug the hard-drive into your Mac, format it accordingly and you’ll be ready to go.
  • The empty case, or do it yourself version of an external hard-drive can provide you with more options, especially if you’re looking for a range of choices when it comes to external interfaces, case styles, and so on. In some cases, depending on the manufacturer that you decide to go with, you will find that the warranty period is much longer than in the case of an already built drive. Typically, this option can be a salient choice if you are dealing with a drive that you already own, repurposing it to suit an upgraded Mac, or simply adding extra features.

What you could do with an External Hard Drive

The amount of ways in which you can use an external hard-drive can be extremely vast, ranging from the essential back-up of your Mac data, to high performance assistance when it comes to producing multimedia. Once you’ve utilized useful online data at places such as machmachines and other to help you find the very best external hard drive for you, it’s up to you to discover just how you want to use it.

Often, the most popular uses for external hard-drives concern providing some extra space for your piles of photos, folders, user accounts, and music libraries.  This is especially good if your Mac came packed with a particularly small SSD drive, as you could find that you quickly outgrow the space that is available on your Mac. By moving folders and data to an external hard-drive, you can quickly free up a sufficient deal of useful space.
