Digital Marketing: From Origins to the Present Day

By Adam Published August 25, 2020 Updated March 17, 2023

The emergence of digital marketing came shortly after the arrival of the Internet, as forward-thinking companies saw a potentially profitable platform to market their products. The 1990s saw the beginning of digital marketing when the Web 1.0 program was launched, and in 1993, the very first clickable banner went online. In 1994, Yahoo arrived and as tech emerged, click on banners began to be seen on many platforms.

Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web

This was the name of the very first search engine, created by Jerry Yang in 1994 and hosted by Yahoo, which had a million hits in its first year, which led to the development of search engines as we know them today. Two years later, search engines like HotBot, Look Smart and Alexa had surfaced, and in 1998, the tech giant Google was born.

Google

From the very day the company started, Google made their way to the top of the tree, and today, this huge corporation owns YouTube and many other online businesses. In the same year, Microsoft launched the MSN search engine, which did very well, and after a few years, there were only a few search engines that remained, as the Internet evolved.

Web 2.0

The development of the Web 2.0 platform enabled user interaction, which was a game changer, and with faster information flow, the stage was set for a competitive digital marketing sector to really flourish. The Internet traffic shot up to the billions and this resulted in many businesses and organizations investing in digital marketing, and in the late 2000s, developing IT allowed digital marketing to use more powerful tools. This is very much regarded as the golden years for digital marketing, as more and more companies realized the potential that online marketing has to offer, and as the digital technology expanded, so did online marketing.

Social Media

In 2004, MySpace was the very first social media platform, quickly followed by Facebook, a platform originally set up for Harvard students to communicate, and it wasn’t long before business owners realised this was a new and innovative platform on which to market their products and services. If you would like to explore the potential of social media marketing, talk to the experts at https://www.moveaheadmedia.co.th/, a leading SEO company with a great reputation in the industry. Today, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are the major social media platforms, and many companies use social media very successfully.  Here is some interesting information about E-A-T, which is used to improve search quality. Social media marketing is a booming sector within the SEO field, and if you would like to generate a huge social media following, talk to a leading digital marketing agency, as they have both the know-how and the tools to ensure that your social media platforms are busy.

The Cookie

We’re not talking about the ones you keep in a jar, rather the cookie that gives the marketing company a record of your online behavior, and there are regulations in place, whereby the user must click on ‘accept’ for a cookie to be installed on their hard drive, as some people find them invasive.  There are user advantages with cookies; in the event, you are shopping online and for one reason or another, you had to log out, the next time you visit the seller’s site, your items will still be in your shopping cart. Click here for information about cookies from a governing body. Some people do not wish to have invasive cookies on their machine and therefore, you always have the choice of accepting a cookie or not.

Cyber-Security

Sadly, cyber-crime has managed to keep pace with developing technology and for any online business, it is critical that your data is protected. If you are not using a cyber-security firm to protect your critical data, this should be a priority, as the consequences of data loss or theft can be considerable. Your current network provider would offer cyber-security services, as do many SEO companies, and using a professional ensures that your data is always protected, which is especially important if you run a shopping cart website, where customers pay online. The same company would also backup all data and store it in a separate location, just in case.

Today, the digital marketing industry is booming, and with the current Covid-19 global pandemic, more and more people are turning to online shopping, which eliminates human contact, and if your company is suffering due to the lockdown, invest in SEO serves and you won’t regret it.

The forecast for the pandemic is that it will continue to be a global issue well into 2021, and with SEO services, you can reach your target audience effectively. It only takes a Google search to connect with a leading SEO agency and they have a tailored approach to their service and can drive traffic to your target website.
