3 Kinds Of Business That Need Tumblr

By Kylie Prescott Published January 24, 2014 Updated March 17, 2023

When it comes to social media, Tumblr isn’t on top of the list of social networking sites needed for business. But one of the reasons why you need to know your market is to determine which social networking platform can effectively reach them. Though Facebook and Twitter are the common choice, it’s not the only ones that can help you promote your business online. Now more than ever, it’s best to know which platforms are the most effective in reaching your intended audience.

Defined as a micro-blogging platform, Tumblr allows users to post all kinds of media in an efficient and quick fashion. There are currently 152 million blogs in Tumblr, so just imagine the kind of success you can get once you reach your market. It’s all in how you can use the features of the platform and utilize its tagging system.

Tumblr also has the reblogging feature that’s pretty much the same as Facebook’s shares and Twitters retweets. It’s also a bit like blogging, but it requires less content. From the term “micro-blogging,” content that has more graphics, photos, or visual content has a more chance of spreading wide into the system, than posts that have paragraphs of description.

Based on the demographics of most Tumblr users, here are the kinds of business that can benefit from it the most.

#1. Photography

Through likes and reblogs, not only your readers but also your readers’ followers can see your work. There are a lot of free Tumblr themes that specialize in photography. It’s an easy and effective way to showcase your photos. Even established photographers see something in this website. Even if they already have their own portfolios, having a Tumblog for their works increases their chance of boosting their following. If you want your photos to be viewed by more people, this is one of the best ways you can do it.

#2. Graphic Design / Illustrators

If you’re a freelance artist, Tumblr is a good choice of platform to boast your portfolio. Tumblogs work in a community-like setting. That’s why many of the viral hits and gifs online originate from Tumblr. It’s through the reblogging system in Tumblr that makes your works acquire massive views. If your work is really good, there’s a better chance of other people sharing it over and over again. But to preserve the copyright of your work, make sure that you put a discreet watermark in your works.

#3. Web Design

If creating themes is your passion, then give Tumblr a try. Be it giving away themes for free or selling it for a price, Tumblr is a good way to build your portfolio and to make a name in the industry. In Tumblr, most users look for themes in Tumblogs that link to the theme’s creator. There’s a more personal approach to Tumblr that other websites do not offer. Users can directly ask help on how they can tweak or modify your themes within your restrictions. This activity can build your authority in this field.

Additional Notes:

If your business falls within the category, below is a little checklist on what to remember when using Tumblr for marketing:

  • Make sure to put a watermark or copyright note on your every post. This way, no matter how many times your post have been reblogged, users can still find a way back to your account.
  • Choose a theme that best represents your business. Make it easy for them to see what you can offer.
  • Remember, it doesn’t have to be your main, but merely an accompanying blog.

What’s great about Tumblr is that it doesn’t take too much of your time. Once you regularly update it with good content, your posts can spread far and wide for a long time.
