13 Points You Must Consider Before Developing an App

By mehul Rajput Published February 23, 2016 Updated October 2, 2022

Let start with an ideal scenario where you are planning and desperately looking forward to developing an app that will get a huge response from the users in the form of countless downloads and everyday usage of your app. But when we are talking about an ideal scenario then how can we be sure that we are going to develop an app which has never been developed previously?

Also, even if we develop an app that has never been developed, how can you ensure users will download it and even if they do, what are the possibilities they will use it right away, well, always?

Here are thirteen points to help you get past these problems.

#1. Know who you are targeting

Well, that’s very important, both for you and for the people whom you want to target. If you are developing a strategy game then people ages 15-35 might be your best bet. So know who you are targeting.

#2. Speed is always appreciated

No one would want a slow app that takes minutes to load. Loading is waiting; waiting is something your user would never want to do willingly. Try avoiding the waiting part as much as possible. Speed up your app and everybody would want to use it.

#3. How many users can download it

Okay this one is tricky! Always focus on developing something that can be used by almost everyone. You would never want to limit your app usage to a specific class, rather focus on making it more public and something that is used by all. With that, make sure your app has that extraordinary feature that compels users to start using it the time they download it. Plus you need to ensure they always use it.

#4. Get your app to a third party for feedback

No one can tell you more about your app than the third party. Make them try it and let them suggest to you all the possible modifications that would only make it better from the user’s perspective.

#5. Working should be crystal clear

If we look from the point of view of our users then no-one would want to spend even a single second in understanding the app’s functionality. This is when you need to understand the importance of simplicity. Never ever complicate your app, it would only exacerbate your downloads and its usage.

#6. Connect with social media

Connecting your app with social media has one biggest advantage that might not be wise to avoid. If you integrate your developed app with social media such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, then more social media users will know there is such an app that exists, leading to more downloads.

#7. Add the customizing feature to make it more appealing

Users love customizing features. Adding a few customizable features will make your app more appealing in comparison to an app that cannot be customized. Users should be capable of getting everything they choose, even if it’s an app, in fact, a customizable app.

#8. Trust versions

Never load your downloaders with one version having numerous features. Try something new in every new version. Try to maintain that “what-new-feature-would-be-coming-next” feeling in people. You might have seen Clash of Clans, gamers update this app just because they have an excitement and curiosity together, of what new is there for them. That keeps the fire burning.

#9. Decide you want to charge for it or make it free

Well, that’s really important for every app developer “charge it or make it free”. Before understanding this, you should know what purpose your app is fulfilling. For the sake of promoting a business like promoting a service or a product, an app can be kept free of charge, but if you are focusing on earning big then don’t make it country specific. Confining it to a specific location will definitely put a stop to your “could-have-earned” income. Additionally, try something that is not dependent on seasons, so that it doesn’t last a specific season and then you would have to wait all year to get your app in demand again.

#10. Avoid loads of features

If you are planning to load your app with way too many features, Wait! That can turn out bad! You don’t want users to give feedback that it as “messy”, “too much to do”, “still discovering its features”, “didn’t understand the app completely even after a month of download” are all such reviews you might not want to see on the review page.

#11. Learn from your competitors

Your competitors are your best teachers. How? Their app’s features and all possible ways they have employed to make their app popular and in-demand will drive your imagination and way of thinking to a whole new level. Even if someone criticizes your app then it is best for you as you know what and why your app needs to be modified.

#12. Is your app platform-dependent?

That needs the 9th point (mentioned above) to be reconsidered. For business promotion, Android platforms would be perfect. As far as making money is considered, choice of iPad or iPhone would be the best.

#13. Amount of risk you can afford to take

This is vital for your understanding. It doesn’t just end here as it also involves launching the app and so much more. Question is, how much risk is affordable? Taking a risk is not wise when you can avoid it. All you need to do is develop a strategy for minimizing the risks. Keep the costs low initially and develop a portfolio of all your small and successful apps, that will help you learn from your mistakes. Keep uploading modules as you are done developing and testing them. Feedback will tell you what improvements are still required. That will help you increase the revenue.

Do you have any more ways to improve your app, then we would appreciate if you share with us!
