This post is about mobile search engine optimization. It basically talks about the difference in the approaches of SEO for a desktop and that for a mobiles and tablets. It expands to give tips on how you can optimize your site for mobile/tablet traffic.

Smartphones have taken over the market. People enjoy surfing the web from their little handsets that are portable and can be used on the go. This is the very reason for which more and more users are finding it convenient to use their Smartphones to do a variety of things like search addresses, maps, services, buy products online, manage their business through various mobile applications and so much more.

Now, this scenario makes it inevitable for your website to be accessible to the mobile traffic as well. You surely don’t want to miss out on all those users who are looking for your products and services through their mobile phones.

The tablet PC is the latest rage, and from what we can tell, this one’s here to stay. Therefore optimising your website for mobile searches is a need of the hour. A lot of people are still under the false impression that a website which ranks higher on the search engine ranks when browsed from a desktop will rank just as high through a mobile phone. It is impossible.

The Difference

Now, think of it like this. When a website, gets listed higher in the search results when browsed through a desktop, it means that its features are extremely search engine friendly. They are descriptive and elaborate, apart from being relevant.

However, it is the exact opposite when surfed through a mobile device. This is so, because the screen size of a mobile device is much smaller than that of a desktop. Therefore, the visual space is reduced. So, websites meant to be viewed from mobile devices have to display only important, to the point kind of content.

This is why the principle of Mobile SEO works differently from other search engine optimisation. To have a good website that can adapt to its browser, you must make a website that is based on the “responsive design” principle. This ensures that the website essentially remains the same, but expands or contracts, based on which browser platform is used.

Tips

# 1. Responsive design is better than building a mobile-specific site. Google recommends it too. Advantages of having one URL mean you now just have one source for link building.

# 2. Make your website user-friendly. If your visitor does not feel too comfortable about how to use your site in the first place, it is really hard to convince him to opt for your products and services.

# 3. Your website should not be too heavy, so that it can quickly get loaded. Some websites do not consider this point, but this is a very important aspect of a user liking your website. Web pages with heavy videos and images take a long time to load on mobile phones. If your website takes too long to load, your visitor will simply close the site and move on to a faster site.

# 4. Bandwidth-sensible: Most mobile users are on a limited bandwidth. If your website eats too much of it, then they certainly will not entertain your site. People would prefer a website that works just as well on a really low bandwidth.

# 5. A detailed study of customer behavior patterns suggest that visitors use shorter tail phrases while searching on mobiles compared to desktop searches. Optimize shorter meta titles, descriptions and keywords.

# 6. Vertical navigational menus are highly suitable for mobile screens, as it helps visitors to easily click on links as per their requirements. It is very important that you see your site on different devices and different resolutions.

# 7. Content is the king. Give the users what they are looking for and not what you want them to see. Don’t use too much fluff and give them relevant things. No one really has the time or energy to read elaborate stories of your dedication and success. They want services, give them just that.

# 8. Always give easy access to your contact details and contact number. It should be very easy for users to make a phone call from details provided on the website.

# 9. Always follow Google’s guidelines.

# 10. Avoid common mistakes such as irrelevant cross-linking and faulty redirects.

Conclusion

These are the key things that people tend to ignore when it comes to the mobile SEO. Channelizing the mobile traffic in the right way can be your stepping stone to success. If you can do this, rest assured that you will always stay ahead of competition.
