Is your spreadsheet taking an eternity time to upload? Do the YouTube videos start and stop all of a sudden? Do the internet connections suddenly drop? Well, no longer will you have to face such problems, as these Wi-Fi woes are soon coming to an end. Different industry groups have begun certifying products which are capable of running on a faster and more reliable wireless network technology. You can say it is the beginning of the next generation of Wi-Fi.
New technology
It’s probable that the majority of the wireless users at home who encounter Wi-Fi connection problems are not related to their broadband services but rather to the Wi-Fi routers. The new technology – 802.11ac – has the potential to provide internet connection four times as fast as the current standard 802.11ac technology. As a result, Smartphones, routers and laptops are already hitting the store shelves. This technical improvement makes Wi-Fi more flexible with the sweeping changes in the home and entertainment industry.
More devices in the home
Research has shown that the total of Wi-Fi connected devices in households has folded during the last five years for a share of a finite network bandwidth. Surprisingly, many of those devices have also started exhibiting hours of video, thereby putting implausible demands on the network. The Wi-Fi has increased speed limits and has moved to a new highway- from the congested 2.4 gigahertz frequency band to a more open 5-gigahertz spectrum.
This change has made the routers accommodate more devices at a time and provide better coverage throughout the apartment. In apartments, usually the areas covered with electronics now can have less interfered Wi-Fi connection. This means connections should not randomly drop, particularly if consumers are using 2.4 gigahertz cordless phones. Greg Ennis, the technical director of the Wi-Fi alliances informed that users will see a significant change in the performance of their applications.
Besides the apartment, Wi-Fi the product is expected to work correctly with other Wi-Fi certified devices before they carry an official Wi-Fi seal. According to Greg, this alliance’s certification process would allow to run free an extensive number of products in the market which will be capable of running 802.11ac. But one should not expect massive improvement at the initial stage. It has also been found that a few uncertified routers are available to support the new technology.
‘AC’ Routers soon available
The recent news is that a wave of ‘ac’ routers should ideally reach the stores by the beginning of 2014 reducing the price of the earlier products. And probably the best time to buy will be the middle of the next year when the prices of the second batch is expected to drop. However, one of the key metrics consumers should look at is the number of simultaneous users the router can handle.
You will need to find a compatible wireless router if you want to get a glimpse of 802.11ac’s potential. You can also try a wireless USB dongle but that will limit the performance. However, to get even halfway close to the gigabit speed, a three-antenna set up is required. Considering other transitions in 802.11 wireless standards, 802.11ac routers should be backward-compatible with older wireless devices using 802.11n. This is important as there are billions of mobile devices that rely on 802.11n wireless protocol.
Setting up an 802.11ac Wi-Fi-router:
Step 1: The most important step is setting up the physical connection to get started. The physical installation of the router and its configuration can be done easily with the help of guided instructions.
Step 2: Since every router comes with a set wireless security key and wireless network name (SSID), you may get started with the Wi-Fi connection right away. Plug the router into the modem by using the internet supplied cable with it and turn the router on. However, make sure that the Wi-Fi feature is on in all the devices such as Smartphone, tablet or PC. Now look for the fixed SSID on any of them and connect it by using the wireless key as provided.
However, if you want to make some modification to the settings or reconfigure them, open the web browser on the device connected to the Wi-Fi network and access this IP address- 192.168.1.1. If this IP address shows blank, try with 192.068.0.1 or even www.routerlogin.net to pull up the router web interface. It will ask for a username and password which you can find by flipping the router upside down. These are details for default login for your router.
I hope this helps improve your Wi-Fi connection. Please let us know any suggestions you have in the comments below.
