This post originally appeared on Greg Fry’s ’s blog, Greg is a regular contributor to Tweak Your Biz.

Guy Kawasaki made a quote that I love – “The nobodies are the new somebodies”. Over the past 5 years businesses have had a big focus on generating Likes, Followers, Connections and friends on their various Social Media sites. Companies have become obsessed by numbers. They think that if they get 1,000s of Facebook likes on their business page they have cracked the social media puzzle.

However, the online world is no different from the offline one in the sense that Quality will often trump Quantity. So whilst generating a large online community may be important, ensure that your community is made up of relevant, engaged and influential people by reading our ‘Klout for Business: A Guide to Measuring Social Media Influence’.

Influence online

Companies have started to realise two things:

  1. People who traditionally had little influence offline have become very very influential online.
  2. Unless they engage effectively with their target audience online their numbers will have little or no ROI.

For this reason we are seeing the more social media savvy companies starting to focus on building more meaningful relationships with their communities online and spending more time identifying and engaging with the most influential online consumers in their industry.

After all if I write a “food” blog post and it is shared 40 times by individuals that have few connections and no real online influence it may not reach as many eyes as I would expect. However if I write a “food” blog post and it is shared by Jamie Oliver or even the great Donal Skehan my message is sure to reach, and be read by, more people.

For that reason it makes sense to look at who is interacting with you and/or your brand online and evaluate how influential they may be. It is the online “movers and shakers” that can really raise a profile or spread a message online.

Sadly they can often damage our reputation too, so we need to know who these people are and where applicable engage with them.

Measuring influence

There are a number of sites companies can use to determine their level of influence online and look at other people’s influence. Three such sites are:

All three sites have their own algorithm to give each individual a score of influence. While it is largely believed that these scores can be manipulated to some extent they do act as a good initial gauge when assessing someone’s influence on Social Media.

Klout for business: what is it?

Klout is a website that measures peoples influence online. It looks at users’ social media accounts and determines one’s ability to generate engagement and drive others to action.

So Klout not only looks at what you do, but how your online network responds to your content.

Klout takes in data from social networks and gives users an overall Score based on their online influence:

  • Data from TwitterFacebook, LinkedInGoogle+ and even Foursquare to determine your level of influence.
  • It does not look at your other online activity such as blogging and other forums when determining your score. However if you share your blog post on your social networks it will look at the number of comments, ReTweets, shares, likes etc.

How your Klout is calculated?

The Klout Score incorporates more than 400 signals from seven different networks. They process this data on a daily basis to generate updates to a user’s Klout Score.

Klout greg

According to Klout themselves:

“The majority of the signals used to calculate the Klout Score are derived from combinations of attributes, such as the ratio of reactions you generate compared to the amount of content you share. For example, generating 100 retweets from 10 tweets will contribute more to your Score than generating 100 retweets from 1,000 tweets. We also consider factors such as how selective the people who interact with your content are. The more a person likes and retweets in a given day, the less each of those individual interactions contributes to another person’s score. Additionally, we value the engagement you drive from unique individuals. One-hundred retweets from 100 different people contribute more to your Score than do 100 retweets from a single person”.

Klout Mob3

Here is a breakdown of what Klout measures:

Facebook

(Klout only measures activity on your Personal Facebook Page)

  • Mentions
  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Subscribers
  • Wall Posts (Klout looks at posts to your wall and believe they indicate influence and engagement).
  • Friends (Number of friends and the reach of your network are less important than how your network engages with your content)

Twitter

  • Retweets
  • @ Mentions
  • List Memberships (Being included on lists created by other influential users).
  • Followers (Number of followers contributes to score, but engagement levels receive more weight than a high follow count).
  • Replies (Klout looks at how you respond to peoples questions and comments mentioning you).

Google+

  • Comments
  • +1’s
  • Reshares

LinkedIn

  • Title: Your reported title on LinkedIn is a signal of your real-world influence and is persistent.
  • Connections (Klout looks at your connection graph to assess your level of real world influence)
  • Recommendations and even endorsements.
  • Comments and Likes on your updates.

Klout

  • The number of +Ks received.

Foursquare

  • Tips Done: The number of suggestions you’ve left that have been completed indicate your ability to influence others on foursquare.

Wikipedia

  • Inlinks: Measures the total number of inbound links to a page.
  • Ratio of Inlinks to Outlinks: Compares the number of inbound links to a page to the number of outbound links.
  • Page Importance (as measured by PageRank): Measured by applying a PageRank algorithm against the Wikipedia page graph.

Other social media

Klout at present allows you to add other social media accounts such as Instagram, YouTube, Flickr and Tumblr to your profile. However, at present the activity and engagement on these sites do not influence your Klout Score. I would predict that in the future this will change and that activity on Facebook Pages, WordPress blogs and Instagram will become contributing factors to one’s Klout score.

The business case for using Klout

  • Some of the biggest and brightest marketers and brands like Disney, Audi, Starbucks, and Nike have incorporated Klout influencers into their traditional marketing efforts. And it is working.
  • According to Klout, each influencer in one of their Perk programs generates an average of 30 pieces of content and millions of possible impressions.

Getting started

New Picture (7)

To sign up and use Klout, you must have at least a Twitter or Facebook account and you sign up by directly connecting to one of those.

You can also link up a Google+ account (a profile not a page), LinkedIn and Foursquare.

Score

After signing in and linking up your desired profiles, your score will be calculated.

Dashboard

Whenever you login to Klout, you will see your dashboard which includes your current score, which social media platforms are performing best and how your score has fluctuated over a 90 day period.

Profile

You can view further criteria on your or another user’s Klout by clicking on the profile tab.

  • Key moments: Here you can review the key moments in a user’s activity over the last 90 days.
  • Influencers: It is also here where one can view a Klout users Influencers.
  • Topics: It is also here where we can see which Topics a user has influence in. A Klout user can select which 10 topics to showcase on their profile. So just because someone has a topic such as “Social Media” listed does not necessarily mean they are influential in that area.
  • Friends: The Friends Tab on an individual Klout account enables a user to identify who in their network has the highest Klout scores.
  • Lists: Another great feature here is the ability to create Lists. Creating lists can be a great way to organise influential Klout friends into categories. For example I could have a list of my top Klout users in Irish Media and a list for my top Irish Social Media users. So just like Twitter lists this can be a great way to focus and drown out the noise.

What is +K?inluencers

+K is in many ways Klout’s own equivalent of Google’s +1 or Facebook’s Like button.

  • Users are encouraged to endorse other users for their topics or areas of expertise. The +K’s a user receives contributes to a user’s overall Klout score. So, giving someone +K means that you are indicating that you think they are influential in a certain topic.
  • Very often a great way to get users to give you +Ks is to make the first move and recommend them for a topic and give them a +K.
  • Note: You are limited to 10 +Ks a day and you can only +K once per topic every week.

How to give a +K

So let’s say I want to give Frank Hannigan a +K:

  1. I go to his profile page and find his listed topics.
  2. All I have to do is select the relevant topic I wish to endorse him for and click the +K button.
  3. You then have the option of sharing your +K on Twitter or Facebook. One reason for doing this is to ensure the user sees your “good deed” and to show your community of followers and/or friends the high calibre of professional you are connected to.

Perks

Top Brand in particular in the US have teamed up with top brands to offer influential Klout users free products and discounts. Perks are often offered to users who have a Klout Score above a certain number and live in a specific area.

  • The Perks button can be found on the top of the page right of the Klout search bar.
  • The value to the brand offering the “Perk” is that they are getting their product or service to online influencers and hopefully they will “champion”, recommend or even just talk about their brand online.

Pulse

Keep up to date with all the world’s top influencers by clicking on the Pulse tab on your Klout page. It can be a great way to view Klout score lists and read top influencers latest blog posts. I must confess I rarely use pulse and find it very American content focused.

MobileKlout Mobile

Klout’s Mobile App is a great way to keep up to date with your, and your friends, Klout scores on the go. I must confess I very rarely paid much attention to my Klout score and never logged into my Klout account on my desktop. However, I often find myself using the app.

Hootsuite

Are you a Hootsuite user? If you have a Hootsuite account and use it to manage your Twitter activity you will be pleased to know that it has some great options to allow you to identify and look at your followers Klout scores. How?

  • If you click on the filter button on your Home Feed and select “Filter by Klout Score” you can select the tweets from users whose Klout score is above a certain level. This filter is a great way of identifying who are the level of influencers in your Twitter network.
  • It may be valuable to engage more with users with a higher Klout score.
  • NB. You can only filter your Home Feed by Klout score with a free Hootsuite account. However, you can filter any list or Twitter stream with a Premium Hootsuite account.

Klout Hootsuite

Another thing you can do on Hootsuite is to click on any users profile and it will tell you the persons Klout score. I use this to look at the scores of users who have ReTweeted or shared my content online.

What is a good Klout Score?

I have read numerous articles looking for the answer to this question and have yet to find a straight answer from anywhere. All users of all Klout scores will have some level of online influence. So it is important not to alienate a large and valuable portion of your audience.

However over the last 12 months I have observed employers looking for staff and documenting minimum Klout scores required in job descriptions. I remember seeing an advert for a Community Manager in the US for Salesforce requiring a minimum Klout score of 35.

Many of the deals and perks seem to target users of Klout scores above 40, so that may be an indicator of a score to aim for.

So in conclusion companies have become very aware that the online communities can make or break their brand.

So the task for businesses is two fold:

  1. Create a strong online presence and level of influence online. So we need key members of staff to score highly on the likes of Klout. Content is power when achieving this and our goal should be on how to create and move content online.
  2. To identify and engage with our key influencers online.

Klout is by no means perfect, but it is only going to improve. It is a good starting point for companies to looks at who are the influencers and who are they influencing online.

For the last number of years the Irish Blogging community has got together for a special night to chat, network, discuss, drink and sometimes even argue (in a nice way;)) about what are the best blogs in our fine Emerald Isle. The event quite simply known as the Irish Blog Awards has until this year has been brilliantly organised by the great

Blog Awards Ireland 2012

Just when the blogging community was coming to grips with the reality that there would be no awards this year……three female Blogging musketeers have come to the rescue. They are:

All incidentally are also TweakYourBiz bloggers:). So thanks to these ladies this year’s awards are now confirmed and set to take place on Saturday, October 13th.

I was delighted to catch up with Lorna and Amanda and find out how and why they decided to take on the task of making the Blog Awards Ireland 2012 the best event yet. One thing that really shone through as I chatted to Amanda and Lorna was these awards are special because they are for everyone.

  • There are no nomination or entry fees and anyone can take part.
  • From the 6 month old blogger that writes about obscure music to the large corporate blog…..everyone has a voice and part to play.

With such a blend of talent under the one roof it is no wonder that past attendees have left the event inspired and thinking outside the box when it comes to writing their future blog posts.

And here arrives another Great Irish Start Up. Bloggertone TV was honoured to meet Stephen Byrne of VenueOne (a recently launched Music website that literally brings live music into your living room via your laptop, iPad, mobile device or internet tv).

The company has spent two years building the site, developing and nurturing the right contacts in the music industry and listening to the music lover’s needs and wants.

They have some notable allies, such as Dave Fanning from 2FM and Frank Murray, well known for helping big bands including Thin Lizzy and The Pogues down the road to success.

The company now employs 20 people and looks set to grow rapidly as the site rolls out to a worldwide audience.

Stephen seems to really grasp the power of social media and the site has some ambitious plans to make the VenueOne experience a truly interactive one!

This interview got me thinking…..do most start-ups take the time to really listen to their target audience before they open their doors for business? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I hope you enjoyed the interview. PS. Do you think I could be the next Jedward?

In this month’s interview Bloggertone TV meets Skype when we both worked in Dublin .So I ditched my Skype Camera, grabbed my umbrella and hit the mean streets of Dublin (they are not that mean really).

Darragh is the Community Manager of a really exciting start up called WorldIrish.com and would be known by many as one Ireland’s most influential people in the social media world. And what struck me when chatting to him was that he is a genuine person who will always remember a face and will always find time to engage and help his community.  He, unlike some people I have encountered before is the same guy online a he is offline. He is worth following on Twitter – @darraghdoyle.

The purpose of our interview was to discuss the exciting start up that is WorldIrish.com.

So what is WorldIrish.com?

Okay in a nutshell it is a website aimed at mapping, connecting and entertaining Irish people around the world.  An online community for Irish people and those who have any association or interest with Irishness. It is currently at BETA stage and is expected to officially launch in the summer of 2012.

The site seems to have amazing potential in bringing together people from all corners of the globe. It was apparent from talking to Darragh just how powerful bringing together people with shared passions and the same interests can be. So watch the interview and do not forget to share your thoughts.

Well Great news ….Bloggertone TV is back and there will be plenty more to come in 2012.

Today, we meet our very own Community Manager Niall Devitt who talks to us about the role of a Community Manager and tells us there are big changes coming for Bloggertone in 2012…..exciting times!! I wonder what will they be?

For those of you who do not know Niall, he is one of the founders of Bloggertone and quite simply one of the biggest “Givers” I have come across in the Social Media world. He is currently the Community Manager for both Bloggertone and BizSugar.

He also assists businesses in getting the maximum return on their Social Media efforts, is a greatly respected trainer and also part of an exciting new company called the Ahain Group. On top of all that Niall is a member of the Advisory Board at Social Media Today. Yep…it is true to say he is a very busy man.

In this interview Niall identifies 4 things that are needed to be a good Community Manager:

  1. Encouraging Members to participate.
  2. Listening to everyone’s opinions and even criticisms.
  3. Recognising people and giving them credit for all the great things they do.
  4. Connecting community members with each other.

Niall also talks about the need for most companies to have a Community Manager. Should your company have one?

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.” – Thomas Alva Edison

There are millions of people with brilliant ideas that never become real. There are many other people with similar ideas or even slightly worse ones that become really successful. Why?

Many of us look with envy at the candidate that is not as experienced as us that secures a new job.  “They were so lucky”, “how did they manage to get that job?”, “Wow the world is so unfair”, “they must have been helped” etc.

Okay, here is a question to ask yourself – Have you ever hit a golf ball without following through? Don’t play golf… no problems, kicked a football, hit a tennis ball or even rowed a boat… without following through on your shot or stoke? I have missed a goal and smashed a clubhouse or two by not following through in the past.

Let’s be honest it doesn’t matter if you are the very best at something you will never sparkle unless you follow through with decisive action. Not even Phil Mickelson, Roger Federer, Lionel Messi or that famous rower I cannot remember would be successful without following through on their shots, training hard and striving for success.

So maybe, that “inferior” candidate that beat us to that job was better at following through with their job search strategy than us?

Here are a few questions you need to answer honestly as a job seeker:

  • Have you followed up on every lead that has been mentioned to you at a networking event or by a friend or family member? It is hard enough out there, so you must seize every bit of help you can.
  • Do you follow up on new business contacts you meet at networking events and job fairs?  There is no point going to an event, connecting on LinkedIn if you do not spend time building a real business connection.
  • Have you ever missed the deadline for a job application because you didn’t get around to amending your cv/resume on time?Just because the deadline is next Friday at 5pm, doesn’t mean you have to wait until 4.59pm next Friday to apply.
  • Do you spend enough time on your job search?  One thing a job seeker has too much of is time. Ask yourself are you using it wisely.
  • Do you follow up on every application submitted? You may jump from the maybe pile to the interview pile by following up on your application.
  • Do you follow up on every interview you attend? Maybe send a quick thank you to the company. This can be a great time to address a question that stumped you at interview. Eg. “Since our meeting, I was thinking about how I could increase company sales and realised that I have two great contacts in the Pharmaceutical industry who may be very interested in the your new Shrink Packaging design etc.”
  • Do you follow up on your unsuccessful applications? Eg. Thank them for considering your application and asking them to consider you for future vacancies that may arise. And/or asking for a meeting to get feedback on your unsuccessful interview.

Okay the list could go on, but I would harp on anymore. We will never reach our goal unless we are prepared to follow through and shoot for success.

We can beat our competition to the next job opportunity if we “Follow Through” on our job seeking efforts. And let someone else be envious of our success for a change.

Many Companies have rushed into Social Media with no real understanding of how it works, what sites will work best for their business and  are blissfully unaware of the potential damage they can do to their brand on such a big stage.

So what are the biggest mistakes companies make using social media? Here is my not-so-sweet-sixteen:

1.       No Consistency

Many businesses start off like a speeding train with their social media efforts. Only to find out that they cannot sustain the volume of activity and engagement.  Don’t start something you can’t finish or don’t intend to do well. If you decide to blog, make a decision to do it on a consistent basis. Not randomly. And the more often, the better. Be consistent, present and responsive. Or don’t do it all.

2.       Listen to me! Sell Sell Sell

Many businesses forget that they are dealing with real human beings. With hopes and dreams and pet peeves. People relate to each other through two-way conversation, both online and in person. Ever met someone who monopolises the conversation? I have. And I tend to walk the other way when I see them coming. These shiny new social media tools are not loud speakers. Talking about yourself won’t make others talk about you. Don’t shout offers and deals and me, me, me. Take your sales hat off and think like a human being. Invest in getting to know your customers better than your competition does. Listen. Be curious, and interested and engaged. Tell stories and share knowledge. Most of all, ask yourself how you can provide meaning and value. How can you be helpful? How can you support your best friends and biggest fans? How can you lift them up? It’s about people.

3.       No Plan

Lots of businesses, especially small businesses don’t take time to build a proper strategy for social media or even do any planning or set any goals. Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail.

4.       It’s Not the Holy Grail

So many businesses believe “social media” is the solution to all their problems. It’s not, but coupled with other forms of marketing it can be very useful. Think of the word social media as “word of mouth marketing”. (Other tools that work alongside your social media strategy are – Your Website, SEO, Digital PR, Database marketing….even your telephone, email and face to face communication).

5.       Time

Many companies give up on their social media efforts just before they were about to succeed. It can take time to see a return on your social media efforts. Time – to get a loyal number of readers for you blog, Time – to build up a significant number of likes on your Facebook page, Time- for followers to start to trust and engage with you on Facebook and Twitter etc.  So be prepared to give more than you get back initially and you will end up getting back far more than you put in.

6.       Testing

Many companies rush into social media and never properly assess which Social Media sites are best for their business.  There is no point being on Plaxo or LinkedIn if your customers (current and potential) are not there. Also, many companies make the mistake of posting great content on the right site at the wrong time. So test different times of the day with your posts and see what days and times get the best level of engagement.

7.       Mixed Messages

Many companies make the mistake of acting differently on different social media sites. Eg. Being overly stuffy on LinkedIn and super casual on Facebook. This can confuse your customer and potentially damage your brand.

8.       Seplling

Yes I did that on purpose…Spelling! Many companies become careless when using social media. Very often we see big companies publishing updates on Facebook or even articles riddled with spelling errors. This can look very unprofessional. Make sure you have all updates and posts spell checked and/or properly proof read.

9.       Measure

Many businesses have no clue whether their social media efforts are working for them or not. They have not put anything in place to track or measure the impact of their tweets, facebook posts etc.

10.   Knock Knock

A recent study in the UK found that 42% of customers expected a response to a query left on Facebook or Twitter within 60 minutes. Many companies are too slow in responding to their customers on Social Media sites and some fail to respond at all.

11.   Getting Shirty

What happens when someone complains about our product or service online? That is a real nightmare and worry for most businesses.  However it may in fact be better or someone to complain about us to our face, rather than behind our back. I have seen many companies making the mistake of getting defensive and starting a visible argument online. This is extremely damaging and in fact very often draws people over to the conversation as your bad press spreads virally.  So if a complaint happens online acknowledge it and take the conversation off line ASAP.

12.   Permanent Ink

Companies occasionally make the mistake of saying something they shouldn’t. This is a bad error in a meeting, but can be a disaster if done online. Remember everything we write on our Social Media sites are public and may even be searchable forever.

13. Ownership

A common mistake that many companies make is that they get a staff member to set up the company’s Facebook page or LinkedIn Group. If the account is set up by that individual’s personal details they can own the rights to that page and not the company. I heard of a company who recently paid an ex employee thousands of Euro to regain ownership of the company LinkedIn group. So ensure all accounts are set up using company emails and make your staff administrators of those accounts.

14. Believing everyone sees your content

Sometimes companies assume just because they have posted something up on Facebook their customers have seen it. This is a dangerous  and ill advised assumption.

15. Believing no one sees your content

When we put information out in the public domain we must be aware that we are not in control of who sees our content. We think no one is listening or watching, but chances are we are wrong.

16. Get your facts Right

Companies have been caught out in the past by making up false statistics and facts online. This is a bad idea in a business meeting, but even more reckless online.

What common mistakes do you see companies making? And what advice would you give?
