Does The Company Blog Go In The New Year?

While making New Year’s resolutions is not quite here yet, being in the final quarter of 2011 should leave many small businesses thinking about where they go from here in 2012.

Perhaps one item up for conversation is whether or not to proceed with the company blog. While it is not likely costing a small business much in expenses, the time and effort factors are definitely up for discussion.

In some company circles, blogs are getting put on the back shelf as company heads figure the time involved in writing quality content, maintaining it, promoting it etc. is not worth it. Others, meantime, view the company blog as an essential marketing tool that serves its purpose in several ways.

However your small business goes in this matter heading into the New Year will likely depend on the current and past success or lack thereof your blog has received.

Among the reasons to keep the company blog going in 2012 are:

  • Serves as a good tool to recruit new clients and maintain your present base;
  • Allows you to promote your products and services, including new offerings, all the while maintaining a dialogue with customers;
  • Typically does not cost money to maintain, giving you a good return on investment (ROI);
  • Brings traffic to your Web site.

Among the reasons not to keep the company blog going in 2012 are:

  • Most of your current and potential customers are not heavy Internet users, so the traffic you’re receiving is minimal at best;
  • You can better promote your products and services through traditional means like print magazine and newspapers, flyers, television and radio;
  • The time your staff responsible for the blog is putting in could be better served elsewhere;
  • The content is not being updated regularly, i.e. stale content is a killer for a Web site.

Oftentimes, whether or not to pull the company blog will resonate with numbers, specifically how much traffic, the site receives.

With a dedicated effort to the site, fresh and interesting content for your readers, and a look that is reader-friendly, your company blog should click with customers and potential customers, all the while allowing your Google rank to increase.

First and foremost, get with your marketing team or person and decide the purposing behind your company’s blog once again heading into the New Year. While it sounds redundant, it is important to go over why you have a company blog in the first place, who your target audience is, and what your yearly goals are with it.

Blogging can open a number of new doors for your small business; just be sure you have the time and effort to do so.

    Hi Dave, one question I might ask is why start a blog in the first instance but as you say if there is no audience to begin with, finishing up needs to be considered. However, in my experience it more often comes down to not defining who a business is writing for and offering value, rather than a lot of blogs that are solely being used as a marketing channel.

    Nicely timed post Dave.
    Another reason small businesses maintain a blog is to generate flow and activity on the main website itself. For example, one of my own websites is placed solely on a blog platform with some static pages. I have this system to save time on maintaining a blog, and maintaining a website. But it’s only one of many solutions.

    With the onset of the semantic web, it became very important for any business to start a blog, so I agree it is now an apt time to reconsider that decision for each specific business, and even decide whether blogging is something they enjoy doing if a solopreneur. Doing something for the sake of it is not doing an effective task.

    However, blogging is mostly a part of a marketing strategy, and should be included in any review.

    Hi Elaine/Niall,
    While I know lots of companies go back-and-forth on whether or not their blog serves a purpose, I still believe in blogs serving an important role more than just a marketing tool. I view blogs as the “opinion page” of my daily newspaper. I want to know what the company head is thinking as it pertains to serving me as a customer. Even if he/she doesn’t personally write the blog, I want the blog to provide me with valuable information I can then use in my decision making process regarding a product and/or service. As I have often noted, my biggest pet peeve with blogs are ones that are stale. Unfortunately, too many business owners still do not get this. Not only is it bad from a search engine stand point, but tells me the company is not placing a lot of importance and effort in its blog.

    Regards,

    Dave

    I really enjoyed this post – perhaps more businesses should be making a new year’s resolution to start up a blog or inject new life into their existing one. but yes, examining their business goals regarding their blog is certainly a good place to start.

    I wonder is changing the company’s old blog page to a page containing their Twitter feed a viable option. That would allow them to tweet industry opinions, share links etc. in quite a time efficient way.

    Blogs actually serve as a good way to give updates to your loyal customers. Although some may have pointed out that your blog’s followers are more likely to be your customers than your potential market, it shouldn’t stop you from opening a channel of communication between you and the people.
