Job Hunting – Become the Pied Piper of Linkedin

pied piper

My last article promised to discuss “How to get your Linkedin profile read by potential employers”. I have kept this promise but I have changed the title as this one is more fun.

Jobseekers in Ireland have most definitely been bitten by the Linkedin bug and this tool is proving a key ingredient for any successful job search recipe. Unfortunately many of the converted jobseekers don’t achieve desired results. Creating an impact profile is important but if potential employers/recruiters don’t view this profile then it represents nothing more than wasted energy. I guess it’s a bit like dressing up in a new dress on Friday night and sitting in. You look great but no one gets to admire your beauty.

Become the Pied Piper of Linkedin.

So how do you become the Pied Piper of Linkedin? How do you attract traffic to your profile? I have never used and therefore cannot comment on the effectiveness of the Pied Piper pipe. Below I have outlined 5 simple tips proven to deliver two potential sources of viewer traffic – traffic generated from within Linkedin and traffic generated from outside Linkedin.

Attracting traffic from outside Linkedin

Commenting on Blogs/Forums – When you comment on a forum or blog it is important to post your Linkedin URL. Take a look at the comments on this site and you will see that many readers miss out on an opportunity.

Email signature – Place your Linkedin URL on your email signature. When you send emails you are opening yourself up to potential viewers.

Business Cards – Print professional business cards using your Linkedin URL as a website. This card can generate potential viewers from real world networking activity.

Attracting traffic from inside Linkedin

Group activity – If you post meaningfully comments in groups then other members will view your profile. A strong headline on your profile also helps. To be honest uneducated comment will deliver viewers but I don’t recommend this strategy. Do as I say and not as I do!! :-)

Expanding your network – When you connect to a new person on Linkedin their network is conveniently informed about this budding friendship. Curiosity = Visitor.

And finally if all else fails…..

Do you know what the Pied Piper has been working at since he left Germany? Why not take a look at his profile – Pied Piper Linkedin Profile (Rebranded himself as a dodgy career expert)

@Lindsay – Thanks a million for the nice comments – hope it helps your client!!

@Niall – Glad you liked the profile :-). I left out my pre 1900 work experience as I did not feel it was relevant. I would also have preferred to have a profile picture of me in my old multi-coloured outfit with pipe in hand but I was told that LI was a professional networking tool so I conformed. :-)

Great post Paul. I agree that email signatures say a lot. Those using Firefox can get this free add on to display the signature in an attractive way: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8206
Recruiters have loads of emails to go through these days (candidate offer is very abundant), so any detail that can make your profile conspicuous counts ;)

Important point Facundo – visibility is the key. Visibility opens you up to more opportunities. Creative ways to drive traffic to your profile can help deliver these opportunities.

You are right when you say there are high volumes of applicants especially for advertised jobs. Advertised jobs represent the M50 as this is where the traffic can be found.

    Thanks for the link.
