5 Key Considerations When Building Your Online Personal Brand

Developing your online personal brand has become an increasingly important factor towards your success and this trend is increasing. Simply put, it’s the ongoing process of how you market yourself with social media now affording you the opportunity to consistently build on yours.

I was recently invited to discuss “why everyone needs to pay attention to personal brands” with Eamonn O’Brien for the Reluctant Speakers Club Expert Series.

Whether you’re a small business owner or you work for a large corporation, personal branding is definitely something you need to be aware of. Your personal brand and business brand are interconnected, both can be built at the benefit of the other. One of the most effective examples of this is Steve Jobs and Apple. From the interview, here are 5 considerations when building your online personal brand:

#1. When building your online personal brand, be authentic and honest

It’s important that your online personal brand is reflective of whom you are in real life. Your online persona should match your offline persona.  People will start to form a impression about you from:

  1. How you describe yourself online
  2. How you communicate online
  3. And from how you behave online

When you meet people for the first time that you already know online, it’s worth checking how you match up.

#2. Building your personal brand takes time and happens in small steps

If you’re going to build your personal brand, you’ll need to set aside some time every day (or every other day) and do those things that will help to grow it. Expect that results will take some time. At the start, you may feel like you’re not getting anywhere but stay patient and continue to put in the work. Soon you will start seeing results. I’ve been building my own online personal brand for many years and I’m still sometimes amazed by the opportunities that have come my way as a result.

#3. Where should you build your online personal brand?

This really comes down to who it is that you would like to communicate with. E.g. If you’re interested in talking to other businesses, LinkedIn is the obvious place to start. Of course, your audience is now likely to be based across multiple social media platforms however I think you’re best to stick with one platform and learn it well before you move on.

#4. Build your brand collaboratively

Online is a big place. When building your personal brand, you are looking to find your niche. Find those people that will appreciate your voice and value your skills. Once you have found them, these same people can help you to build your brand. My personal brand has come from helping others in my network.

#5. Getting the balance right

Marketing oneself is not something that comes easily for everyone but nowadays it’s too important to ignore.  Those people that do are putting themselves at a disadvantage. We all need to take personal branding seriously.

That said, it’s not a licence to start making wild claims or pretend to be someone you’re not. Whether online or off, people are smart and can usually see us for who we really are. Every one has talent(s) so clearly the best approach when building your personal brand is to focus on yours.

What have you found effective when it comes to building your personal brand?
