Is everything in your business going to plan?

Not if you don’t have a working business plan it won’t be!

Planning your business is vital. Without it, you’ll take more risks, make more mistakes, underestimate the competition and undervalue your customers. All successful companies use on-going business planning – if you emulate the best, that’s what you’ll be. As soon as you have determined your Strategic Plan, i.e. where you want to be, you need to set about getting there.

Would you ever consider setting off on a long unfamiliar journey without your SatNav or road map and only a dribble of fuel in the tank? You might make good progress for a short while, but before too long the roads will narrow, your fuel gauge will hit zero and your mobile phone will show no signal. Oh, if only you had bothered to plan ahead!

Business planning is just like going on a journey – you need a plan to get you to your final destination. You need to be serious about planning. You need to focus on your goal – outstanding success – and determine the most effective route towards it. Don’t be disheartened if the thought of sorting out your business plan sounds daunting – the initial burst of effort will pay real dividends. It will signal your chance of success and how to go about achieving it.

The key elements you need to include in your business plan?

  1. The Business Background
  2. The Product/Service
  3. The Market
  4. Marketing/Sales Strategy
  5. Regulatory
  6. Risks
  7. Financials

My advice to you is to make your business plan a “living” document that evolves and adapts as you progress on your journey. Remember! Planning is a necessity and if you want real success you can’t afford to ignore it. I hope your business journey is a smooth one – no potholes or old muddy tractors up ahead – and do make sure to check your fuel gauge!

Good post Emma. The list of elements is helpful.
People in general take planning as another task. In order to make something exciting out of this I always suggest to “visualise” the goal/s. Being able to see what success looks like, give you a tremendous push everyday to follow your plan and sharpen it accordingly.

Brilliant post! We all like to feel that we have planned our journey – but howabout the ongoing journey? I’d never considered the business to be an ongoing journey – thank you for pointing this out, and now I know this it all seems so obvious!

Hi Emma, Welcome to Bloggertone! Timely advice “My advice to you is to make your business plan a “living” document that evolves and adapts as you progress on your journey” I think that this is a key point and one that is missed, The environment in which we now operate means that rigid planning is entirely counter-productive. Planning must be an evolving and ongoing tast. Great post, thanks for sharing. Regards, Niall
